About Us

India Labourline is an Alternate Labour Dispute Resolution Mechanism that offers free legal support and mediation services to unorganized sector workers.

The India Labourline is modelled after the highly successful Legal Education and Aid (LEAD) programme of Aajeevika Bureau. LEAD has supported over 100,000 workers over the years and ensured the recovery of over INR 60+ crores in unpaid wages and compensation for workers.

Challenges Faced by Informal Workers

01

Vulnerability of Informal Workers

Without formal contracts, job security, or social benefits, informal sector workers often face exploitation, poor working conditions, unsafe environments, and low wages. They are frequently subject to wage theft, non-payment of compensation or benefits in case of workplace accidents, bonded labor, and other labor rights violations.

02

Barriers to Justice

The legal systems and formal grievance mechanisms are complex, ineffective, slow, costly and not geared towards the realities of informal work. This prevents workers from seeking access to justice through these mechanisms.

The India Labourline addresses these challenges by offering mediation & legal aid, connecting informal workers with justice through outreach, case registration & resolution efforts.

How we work

The India Labourline program uses a combination of Workers Facilitation Centers (field teams located in 14 cities), Field Fellows (5 cities) and a toll-free helpline number to register labour dispute cases and to undertake mediation.

The India Labourline helpline is the cornerstone of the program, offering free support to unorganized sector workers in six languages: Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Marathi. It facilitates fair dispute resolution through mediation, helping workers and employers/contractors reach mutually acceptable outcomes, while striving to enhance access to labour justice.
